Sgt Cameron Lewis – Fighting Fit to Serve and Win

Sgt Cameron ‘Cam’ Lewis – RAF Boxing Elite Athlete, double UKAF Elite Champion (75kg & 80kg) and English Elite National Championship Quarterfinalist.

In his three years of service, Sgt Cameron Lewis has proudly represented the RAF in no less than an incredible 30 individual contests.

From Olympic ambitions to a surprise win on the RAF Sports Lottery, no dream is too big for Cam – and with the exceptional support of the RAF Boxing Association (RAFBA), its dedicated coaches, and funding from the RAF Central Fund, absolutely anything is possible!

Reflecting on his journey so far and future aspirations, Cam shares how for him boxing is not just a sport but a way of life.

“Boxing is not just a sport; it is a lifestyle. It keeps me mentally strong, physically fit, and ready to tackle any challenge I come across.

Being part of the RAFBA has helped my career immeasurably by giving me the chance to represent the Service, coach people in the RAF, and build relationships across the wider Air Force.

I am extremely proud to have represented the RAF in 30 different contests over the last three years. My greatest achievements to date are being crowned Box Cup champion, competing as a National’s finalist, and twice obtaining the UK Armed Forces Boxing Champion belt.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue representing my country and my ultimate goal is to become a professional fighter and compete in the Olympics.

My boxing success is a real testament to the unrivalled backing and dedication of RAFBA, its supporters, and the Central Fund. I am eternally grateful to everyone who has encouraged, coached, and believed in me.

I am currently based at RAF Odiham, where we have an excellent bespoke boxing gym for the Station – facilities that were funded by an £18,000 Station Enrichment Grant from the Central Fund back in 2021.

Our gym is an inclusive environment that provides a safe space to train, host sparring events, and introduce new members to the Association.

Alongside this, Individual Sports Grants from the Central Fund have provided financial support towards my specialist boxing kit. Access to high-quality gloves and headguards is absolutely essential, and they need replacing once a year.

I play the RAF Sports Lottery to support the charity, and at the start of 2024, I was lucky enough to scoop the £3,000 prize. So, to say that I have benefitted from the Central Fund would be an understatement! What an incredible feeling!”

Sgt Lewis’ story illustrates how powerful the support is within RAF Sport and just how many opportunities there are to progress if you are willing to put in the work.

His story also highlights how crucial funding streams from the Central Fund support the RAF Sport Associations, Station clubs, and individuals at all levels, giving more personnel the opportunity to get involved with sport.
