The RAF Video Gaming & Esports Association (RAF VGEA) comprises one of the RAF’s fastest growing and largest membership bases, with everyone closely knit through their community Discord server known as the “RAF Gamers Network” (RGN).
Established in 2019, the RGN has welcomed more than 1200 gamers of all abilities across the Whole Force, supporting all social and casual aspects of online gaming regardless of the games played, as well as esports development at the grassroots level through to Inter Service representation.
Currently, the RAF recognises four competitive games as official military esports. These games have been primarily recognised as they have afforded players the ability to develop key skills and attributes that correspond to real-world requirements in the RAF, such as leadership, communication, strategic thinking and decision making, often in high-pressure environments.
Across a range of games and the wider scope enjoyed by their members, there are sub-communities that have thrived and expanded rapidly to put the RAF at the forefront of gaming in the UK Armed Forces, with successes from Tri-Service events to International competitions. A large part of their success has been due to the implementation of several gaming ‘arenas’ at Stations around the UK and abroad, allowing their members to enjoy the freedoms and social aspects that gaming offers them – so keep an eye out for a club near you!
