The RAF Nordic Association offers the RAF Whole Force the unique opportunity to sample one of the most physically challenging and probably most enjoyable of the winter sports. Nordic skiing in the RAF encompasses the separate international winter sport disciplines of cross-country skiing and biathlon.
Cross-country skiing is a winter sport that tests both physical strength, endurance, and mental fortitude. It can take place over varied terrain and over varying distances that tests both physical endurance and mental fortitude. As well as offering a full-body workout the sport provides the opportunity to enjoy amazing scenic winter landscapes.
Biathlon is a unique winter sport that combines skiing and rifle shooting. The sport takes place in dedicated biathlon facilities and requires athletes to ski a designated distance before shooting a .22 biathlon rifle at five targets over a 50m distance in both prone and standing positions. It is a sport that tests both physical endurance and precision under pressure.
During the summer, athletes use roller skis to effect cross-country ski technique training in the UK almost all year round. Use of roller skis also affords personnel the opportunity to represent the RAF in competitions across the UK.
In the winter, novices to the sport can experience some amazing winter locations and may have the opportunity to represent the RAF at a variety of respected military and international competitions within Europe.
Membership is open to the RAF Whole Force and all equipment is provided. Get in touch today!
