The most highly anticipated fixture in the RAF Rugby League calendar reached its thrilling climax last week, as the Royal Air Force (RAF) went head-to-head with 2023 champions, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), in the final of the Tri-Nations Rugby League Tournament 2025.
Having secured a solid victory over the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in their opening match, the RAF wasted no time displaying their determination and prowess on the pitch. Eagerly watched by their sponsors and home fans, the team delivered a second, powerful performance to clinch the title and be crowned champions of this international competition.
The fierce battle amongst all three opponents concluded in a display of true camaraderie, with each nation sharing symbolic gifts reflecting their unique heritage. The RAF’s victory not only showcased their athletic capabilities but also the power of the community within Rugby League.
The final chapter of the tournament concludes in 2027, hosted by Australia, where the RAF will face the RAAF and RNZAF once again to defend their title.
Speaking on behalf of RAF Rugby League as their President, Air Marshal Al Marshall said:
“The value of sponsors to RAF Sport has been demonstrated in many ways through the 2025 Tri-Nations Rugby League Tournament, which involved the best rugby league players from the Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The partnerships formed between NG Bailey IT Services, the Royal British Legion, Menzies Aviation and RAF Rugby League were vital to enabling the RAF to host the tournament. The success of the tournament extended way beyond the close-fought battles on the rugby pitch. Whilst the RAF triumphed overall as a result of two close-fought victories, the wider Defence Engagement activities and shared experiences will live long in the memories of all those involved in any aspect of the tournament, be that sporting, commemorative, or cultural in nature.
The resources RAF Rugby League sponsors provide ensure a professional environment for RAF service personnel to train, play, and recover whilst balancing the needs of their primary operational roles. This translates into sporting performances of high quality by players who are ambassadors for the public they serve, including past, current, and the next generation of service personnel.”
This year’s success was made possible thanks to invaluable support from sponsors; not only did their backing help to elevate the men’s tournament, but it also enabled the creation of the RAFRL Women’s team, who went head-to-head against GB Police earlier on in the day.
Kelly Tedesco, Managing Director at NG Bailey IT Services, shared her thoughts on their long-term partnership with RAF Rugby League:
“It has been an absolute pleasure for NG Bailey IT Services to sponsor the RAF Rugby League over the last 10 years and to watch how the women’s game has developed in the manner that it has.
Well done to all three nations for a fantastic tri-country tournament – I look forward to coming and watching many more games.”
