Cpl Arran Devine – RAF Elite Team Captain, Full time Boxing Scotland National Team member, Scottish National Champion and UKAF Champion.
Boxing champion and RAF Elite Team Captain, Cpl Arran Devine, first discovered the RAF Boxing Association through his Station club and the dedicated coaches who recognised his potential early on.
His meteoric rise from grassroots newcomer to elite athlete has been fuelled by fierce determination, unwavering devotion, first-class coaching, and essential grant funding from the RAF Central Fund.
Arran shared with us his journey to success and some of the highlights of his career so far:
“Boxing absorbs the majority of my time. I am a full-time boxer and when I’m not training, I’m thinking about boxing – competitions, tournaments, opponents, technical aspects, nutrition, and strength and conditioning!
It has been quite a journey to get from grassroots beginner to RAF Elite Team Captain. With focused, structured training from incredible coaches, along with my own commitment to the sport, I have been able to build solid foundations that have led to consistent and steady progress.
I would not have become a National Champion or have been selected to represent my country without RAF Boxing (RAFBA). Their support opened the door for me to be selected onto the Elite Athlete programme and train full-time under the Boxing Scotland National Team. I’m forever grateful to those who have pushed and supported me in achieving this amazing opportunity.
Since joining the RAFBA, I have also been lucky enough to travel regularly and compete at the biggest boxing tournaments in the UK and abroad. My aim for the future is to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and win an English National Amateur Championship.
These opportunities wouldn’t have been possible without the ongoing funding and support that the RAF Central Fund provide to RAF Sports Associations each year.
I have benefitted from charitable funding through their Individual Sports Grants, enabling me to access high-quality kit and equipment including gloves, protective wear, training clothing and running shoes.
I play the RAF Sports Lottery not only for a chance to win a cash prize, but also in support of what the Central Fund gives us all towards our sports, regardless of experience level.”
Cpl Arran Devine’s story is a reminder to everyone that you do not have to be great to get started, but you do have to start to be great.
